To correctly calculate the present value of a structured settlement or annuity, first enter the fitting discount rate (8- 20%) followed by the payment schedule of the settlement or annuity. To calculate the aggregate number of payments, use the number of confirmed payments left in the cash flow (i.e. 60 payments = 50 years). Life contingent years have a larger discount rate as a result of the life insurance that should be purchased for these types of affairs. An increase in the discount rate is appropriate for life contingent deals.
